If your ‘gummy’ smile sometimes leaves you feeling a little self-conscious, your Dental Care Network dentist can probably help.
Gingivectomy, commonly known as a ‘gum lift’ procedure, reshapes uneven or excessive gum tissue above the teeth, quickly and painlessly.
There are a number of ways and reasons to undertake a gummy smile correction. Gum contouring is regularly completed as a cosmetic dentistry treatment to improve appearance. Gum lifts can also be recommended as a restorative dentistry treatment to help remove and reduce the effects of chronic gum disease.
If you would like to show a little less every time you smile, do not hesitate to contact us or keep reading below to learn more about the cosmetic dentistry options available to treat excess gum tissue.

A gum lift, also known as a gingivectomy, is a cosmetic procedure to reshape a person’s gums for a more attractive smile. This involves a dentist cutting and reshaping the gum line around the visible, front teeth.
Whether there’s too much gum showing (a “gummy smile”) or too little, some people can be unhappy with how their gums look to others.
Sometimes, a gum defect may be caused by gum disease or is merely how the gum formed over the years. The gums may not have receded enough after the permanent teeth came through. Alternatively, the gums may have receded too much over the years, exposing more of the tooth and looking unsightly. This may require a gum graft to restore the receded gum line.
Whatever the reason for unsightly gums, a gum lift can reshape them and give you a brand new smile.
Thanks to the introduction of lasers, a gingivectomy is no longer such a painful treatment involving stitches and a lengthy recovery. Now, the whole operation can happen painlessly under a local anesthesia.
Because lasers cauterise (seal off) blood vessels automatically, there is almost no bleeding. This means the dentist can cut and reshape the gums in about two minutes per tooth, which is incredibly fast.
As a modern gingivectomy is fast, painless and with little or no bleeding, post-operative recovery is a lot easier. Most patients are able to eat and drink as normal within 24 hours wand the gums should completely heal in a couple of days.
However, a gum lift is often carried out at the same time as other cosmetic dental work such as the application of veneers or crowns. So any recovery will need to take into account any additional instructions from your dentist.
As always, keep the affected area clean to avoid infection and schedule follow-up appointments with your dentist to check everything is as it should be.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding with a surgical or invasive procedure, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
